Message from Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, on the occasion of the Canadian Multiculturalism Day - June 27, 2007
June 27, 2007
“Canadian Multiculturalism Day is even more meaningful this year as we are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Canadian Citizenship Act. Since it came into force on January 3, 1947, more than six million people from all around the world have come to Canada to explore new possibilities or, like my family and me, to start a new life, far from terror. They have found here the ideal of a society in which all citizens enjoy equal rights.
In Canada, we can explore opportunity’s many faces and enrich society with our unique contribution. Our country is the sum of our experience, our heritage, and our perspective of the world rather than the sum of our differences. This gives us strength and guarantees a promising future.
While conflict continues to divide entire populations in many areas of the world, it is important that we seize every possible opportunity and promote dialogue, exchange and sharing between our many cultures. May this day be a celebration of our diversity, which is not only a source of enrichment, but a message of hope for humanity.”

“But Yukon is so much more than a legend. It is a place where—if my impressions thus far are correct—solidarity is a way of life. Solidarity between the Aboriginal people, who were the first to share the spirit of this generous land with us, and the Anglophones and Francophones who have put down roots here. You are extremely lucky to live in one of those rare parts of the world where Nature has been preserved in all its splendour and still has all its rights.”

“(Your) legends are one of Canada’s greatest resources. They are the very first expressions of our collective imagination. I want you to guard them closely and I would like every Canadian to have access to their wisdom and beauty.
Everywhere I go—within Canada and around the world—I will tell people about the legend that you have shared with me. I will tell them about the young people here who are determined to help their culture and community thrive.
Young people who want to face the future with confidence and who want to find a way to proudly take control of their own destinies. Your efforts to maintain Aboriginal traditions, experiences and languages help enrich the lives of the entire population of Canada and are a symbol of hope for people all over the world, people who, like you, are working hard to preserve their culture.”
